Field Ready CPR/AED Certification
Hands-on training that prepares you for a real cardiac arrest, not just a test.
Hearts On The Field Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Long Beach, California, working to prevent sudden cardiac arrest deaths in young athletes. Our Field Ready CPR/AED Certification trains coaches, parents, athletes, school staff, and community members to respond when every second counts.
What the certification covers
- Adult CPR with an AED
- Infant CPR with an AED
- Two-rescuer team CPR for adults and infants
- Choking response for adults and infants, including when choking turns into cardiac arrest
- Opioid overdose response with naloxone (Narcan) nasal spray
- Recognizing sudden cardiac arrest, the chain of survival, and California Good Samaritan protections
Built on the 2025 American Heart Association Guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.
What makes Field Ready different
Trained on real-time feedback manikins
Candidates practice and test on Innosonian Brayden manikins that light up only when compressions reach the right depth and rate, so every candidate knows their CPR is actually moving blood.
Tested in full 10-minute scenarios
Real CPR does not stop after a few cycles. Every skills test is a timed, 10-minute scenario, so candidates prove they can keep high-quality CPR going until EMS arrives.
Nine scenarios, not one checklist
Candidates pass nine hands-on scenarios: adult and infant CPR, two-rescuer teams, adult and infant choking that turns into cardiac arrest, and an opioid overdose that ends in cardiac arrest.
A high bar
Candidates must score at least 90% on a written knowledge test and at least 90% on every skills scenario, with every critical skill performed correctly. There is no partial credit for the skills that save lives.
No coaching during the test
Evaluators read a scripted scenario and score what they see. Candidates pass because they can do it on their own, the way they will have to in a real emergency.
Built for the field
Scenarios start the way real emergencies do: checking the scene, protecting yourself, pointing at bystanders to call 911 and get the AED, and handing off to EMS.
How Field Ready prepares you for the real thing
-
1
Recognize it fast
Candidates learn that a person who collapses and is only gasping is in cardiac arrest, and that gasping is not breathing.
-
2
Act in the first minutes
Survival drops with every minute without CPR or a shock, so candidates practice getting help moving within seconds by pointing at one person to call 911 and another to get the AED.
-
3
Push hard and fast for as long as it takes
Candidates prove they can keep compressions at the right depth and rate for 10 straight minutes, switching with a partner before they tire.
-
4
Use the AED with confidence
Candidates practice with AED trainers on adults and infants, including what to do when only adult pads are available for an infant.
-
5
Handle the situations that turn into cardiac arrest
Choking and opioid overdose scenarios move into CPR the way they can in real life.
-
6
Work as a team
Two-rescuer scenarios build the communication and accountability real rescues need.
